Ron and
Ellie Thompson, owners and operators of the Ridgeback Winery in Mt.
Dora, Florida, were recently notified that six of their wines were
awarded medals at the Florida State Fair International wine
competition held in Tampa in February. At the competition, the
Ridgeback Winery took home a silver for its Cayuga Zanta Wine and
bronze medals for two other Zanta wines, the Pinot Noir and Seyval.
These wines were made from fresh juice that the Thompsons brought to
Florida in October, 2006, from a vineyard at Seneca Lake in the
Finger Lakes of New York. Additionally, bronze awards were given to
their Red Zinfandel “Table Whine,” the Sangiovese “Rosco Red,” and
the “Smelly Sneaker” Pinot Gris. The 2007 Florida State Fair
competition judged 1578 entries from commercially sold wines entered
from across the United States and foreign countries as well
An earlier competition, “Wines of the South” held in
Nashville, Tennessee, in November, 2006, and sponsored by the
University of Tennessee Food Science and Technology Department saw
the Ridgeback Winery winning two additional medals. In this
competition, the Sangiovese “Rosco Red” was given a silver and
“Three Dog Night,” a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
and Merlot was a bronze medal winner. This competition had 433
entries with representative from 60 wineries in 10 southeast
states. Judging at all competitions is done in blind tastings by a
panel of experts who rate each wine, not according to a judge’s
personal likes and dislikes, but each on its own merit considering
type and style. Scoring is based upon appearance, aroma, taste, and
aftertaste.
These
awards bring to twenty-five the total medals earned by the Ridgeback
Winery since it began business three years ago Additional gold,
silver and bronze medals have been awarded from the Amenti del Vino
Wine Society wine competition held in Cromwell, Connecticut, the
Indy International Wine Competition, sponsored by the Indiana State
Fair in coordination with the Indiana Wine Grape Council, Purdue
University, and the Vino Challenge International, Atlanta, Georgia
